Janelle Barretto (also known as Janelle Barretto-Squires) is a highly accomplished Filipino corporate executive, business development specialist, and tech ecosystem builder. With a career spanning over three decades across the hospitality, publishing, marketing, and technology sectors, she has established herself as a vital figure in driving digital transformation in the Philippines. Most notably, she is recognized as the President and Co-Founder of Philippine Blockchain Week, where she champions the integration of emerging technologies into mainstream businesses and public governance.
Barretto began her professional journey after completing a Bachelor of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Administration at the University of the Philippines – Diliman from 1985 to 1989. She immediately entered the hospitality industry, joining the sales team of the prestigious Mandarin Oriental Manila. This foundational experience in corporate relations and account management provided her with strong corporate communication and relationship-building skills. In the late 1990s and 2000s, she expanded into diverse entrepreneurial ventures, working in events organization, real estate, jewelry design, and international trade across Bangkok and Manila.
In 2011, Barretto pivoted into the media and marketing sectors when she was appointed as the Chief Operating Officer and Vice President of adobo magazine, a premier trade publication for advertising and brand communications in the Philippines. In this role, she partnered with the leadership team to spearhead internal management, community building, and digital revenue growth. Her deep involvement in organizing massive industry functions—such as the highly regarded Digital Marketing Conference (Digicon)—solidified her reputation as a powerful leader capable of managing large-scale global events and complex professional networks.
Building upon her extensive background in media, marketing, and corporate development, Barretto smoothly transitioned from Web1 and Web2 paradigms into the cutting-edge world of digital assets. In July 2022, she co-founded the Philippine Blockchain Technologies Inc. and took the helm as the President of Philippine Blockchain Week. Through this organization, she has actively advocated for utilizing blockchain technology to streamline regional payments, accelerate remittances, and bring greater transparency and trust to government financial allocations.
Today, Barretto continues to bridge the gap between traditional enterprise and future-forward technology. Alongside her leadership in the blockchain sphere, she offers her strategic guidance as a Senior Business Development Consultant for DITO CME Holdings Corp, while having previously served on the Board of Trustees for the Digital Marketing Association of the Philippines.
